If you do sport at any level, sooner or later you’re likely to be injured. As our colleagues at Physiopedia state rather plainly, ‘musculoskeletal injuries are an inevitable result of sport participation’.
Fortunately, physiotherapists are experts in all things musculoskeletal. This means we’re well placed to treat the sprains, strains and other injuries that sports people regularly sustain.
Whether your injury is traumatic – the result of a fall or a collision or due to wear and tear and overuse, don’t hesitate to book and appointment with our sports physio.
When should you take a sports injury to your physio?
If you’re currently treating a sports injury with rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) well done! If you’re also wondering if and when you should see a physio the answers are ‘yes’ and ‘now’.
In fact, a great time to see your physio is before you get injured – more on that later.
We advise you not to ignore a sports injury. It may not heal properly on its own and you might end up with long-term problems including, stiffer joints, weaker muscles and tighter tissues.
Whether your sports injuries are recent or ancient history, professional assessment and management can minimise their impact on your sporting performance.
Sports injury recovery – get a personalised program
Every injury is different, and every athlete heals differently. Your physio at The Brisbane Spine Clinic will diagnose your injury and determine its causes if it is unknown. Then they’ll design an incremental, guided recovery plan.
This plan reflects the nature and severity of your injury. It is geared to your ability to manage your rehabilitation and to preventing the injury reoccurring.
How do we treat sports injuries?
Our physios aim to reduce your pain and return your injured body to fitness as quickly as possible. Your personal recovery plan may include some or all of the following treatments designed to do just that.
- Pain relief
Dry needling and the Mulligan concept are modern medical techniques designed to reduce acute and chronic pain and increase mobility. - Exercise therapy
A set of customised and guided sport specific exercises and stretches. These exercises aim to help you improve movement and increase short and long-term flexibility and strength. - Joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques
These are hands-on treatments designed to reduce your pain and to help your body begin to move more freely.
Sports injury treatment – what to expect
Sports injury rehabilitation aims to diagnose and treat injures AND prevent them from reoccurring.
As a result of trusting us to treat your injury you may experience some or all of the following things:
- Rapid relief from pain as a result of treatments such as dry needling, joint mobility techniques, and massage.
- Increased flexibility and strength once your injury heals as a result of your prescribed exercises.
- A speedier return to sport or work due to an increased healing rate.
- Reduced scar tissue as a result of techniques that guide how and where it forms.
- Enhanced sporting performance because we’ve helped you identify and correct biomechanical faults that may have made you vulnerable to injury.
Sports injury prevention – get proactive
You don’t have to wait until you’re injured to team up with one of our sports physios.
Why not take a preventative approach? Visiting your physio for biomechanical testing and sport specific screening may reduce your risk of injury and improve your performance.
Biomechanics is the study of human movement. Physiotherapists are trained to detect and help you correct biomechanical faults, which can predispose you to injury. We can also assess muscle imbalance and measure your range of motion against the requirements of your chosen sport.
Our team works with a diverse range of athletes including runners, tri-athletes and weight lifters to monitor and stabilise the health of their muscles and ligaments. Our aim is to support our athletic clients to achieve peak performance and stay injury free.
Athletes of all kinds, if you’re injured now or keen to reduce your injury risk, book an appointment.
