Back pain physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for Back Pain
Back pain can stop you from doing the things you enjoy and is often one of the easiest injuries to sustain. Whether you’ve been lifting weights, moving boxes or running around after young children, the majority of temporary back pain is treatable and preventable; and physiotherapy can help! [1]
The Brisbane Spine Clinic is a team of highly qualified, passionate physiotherapists who can support you to get back on the field, in the gym or running rings around kids at the playground. Contact us to book an appointment today.
Understanding back pain
The back is a complex part of the body, made up of bones, tendons and muscles. There are, unfortunately, many places you can injure, or strain. Our back does a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to protecting, moving and using our body. It supports our pelvis, ribs, limbs and our head.
Given the complexity of the spine and the supporting muscles, joints and tendons, it makes the back susceptible to injury; especially if we aren’t sitting, standing, exercising or moving in the right way.
Some common causes of back pain are:
- Incorrect or repetitive heavy lifting
- Sudden awkward movement
- Poor posture
- Stress and muscle tension
There are also medical conditions which can cause back pain, including:
- Osteoporosis
- Sciatica
- Arthritis
- Pregnancy
- Obesity [1]
Understanding what is causing your back pain is an important part of our treatment plan at The Brisbane Spine Clinic. Call us today to book a consultation with our team.
Treatment of back pain
Physiotherapy is often the first line of defence for treating, understanding and preventing back pain. While some back pain can be managed at home and may likely reduce over time, physiotherapy is often an effective and accessible way to treat your pain.
Treatment for back pain conditions is varied and can include:
- At-home management
- Over-the-counter medication
- Prescription medication
- Physiotherapy
- Chiropractic
- Surgery
The Brisbane Spine Clinic offers a holistic approach to treating your back pain with our treatment plan guided by the cause of the condition, rather than just treating the pain itself (we’ll do this, too!).
Whether you have a minor sprain or a lifelong condition, like osteoporosis, our team can support you to get more movement in your back and show you ways to strengthen your problem areas to prevent and treat ongoing pain.
Recovering from back surgery or injury
Physio after back surgery
Your post-op period can often be filled with questions about when you’ll be back to normal, and one way to aid your long-term recovery is through the support of a physiotherapist. Whether your surgery was last week, last year, or ten years ago, there are things you can do to support your recovery with our team, including rehabilitation, mobilising your back and treating your muscles and spine.
If you have had surgery recently, we recommend getting clearance from your surgeon before seeing a physiotherapist. Depending on your surgery, you may be able to start physio for back pain in your immediate recovery or might need to wait six to twelve weeks, for example.
Physio after a back injury
Depending on the severity of your injury, whether it be a fracture, sprain or break; a physio can often be a complementary allied health support in your recovery.
Some things a physio can support with are gentle exercises, stretching, dry needling and mobilising or immobilising the affected area, depending on the injury.
Physiotherapy for back pain
Physio for back pain can help with a range of conditions, with back pain being a common condition we treat in our practice. Physio for back pain can often help prevent further injury or pain, which when left untreated can sometimes worsen to involve your nerves and limbs.
Your qualified The Brisbane Spine Clinic physio can support you with:
- Understanding what’s causing your back pain
- Manual therapy to treat the back pain
- Exercises to strengthen and stretch your back
- Temporary immobilisation of your back to support the affected muscles
- Referral for medical imaging or additional treatment, if required
You may be wondering whether you should get physio or chiro for back pain. While both have benefits, a qualified physiotherapist can help mobilise the muscles in your back and provide manual muscle treatment. You can see both a physiotherapist and a chiropractor at The Brisbane Spine Clinic.
